| About Michi Artists Studios |
|
How MICHI came about “MICHI
ARTISTS STUDIOS + GALLERY” is really a natural evolution
of UTU ARTWORKS; It was formally inaugurated on March 19,
2005, and reflects the new energy borne from the union of
Ketna Patel and Jonathan Reading. UTU and MICHI are the same
in essence and spirit……UTU Artworks’ humble
beginnings started back in 1996 when it was founded by Ketna
Patel as a small Art studio; a time much before the opening
of the Singapore Esplanade Art Center and when the word Bohemian
was seldom used. It was a umbrella for like minds and people
with global outlooks. Apart from making many associations,
UTU Artworks; now MICHI, has survived and grown by working
on several projects and exhibitions both locally and internationally.
With Jon coming in, the Artistic space of MICHI has expanded
more into music and film, so stay tuned with new work in the
pipeline!

About Michi
The name MICHI stems from a Tao word meaning quite literally “path” or “road”.
Metaphorically, it takes on the meaning of ones ‘inner
path’, or ‘life journey’.
Acting as an umbrella organization,
MICHI represents and supports separate artists with
common interests. So, it works as an extension to the
Artist’s studio. Each Artist works independently
on his or her own portfolio until a creative opportunity
comes their way, when skilled teamwork and varied aesthetic
expressions and experience are contributed towards the
manifestation of the project. This for e.g can be a
group exhibition, or a Hotel Project, or educational
workshops.
As additional activities, the Studio Gallery in Chipbee
Gardens holds regular Open House Shows, Film nights
by independent local Movie makers, Life Drawing Classes,
Flamenco Guitar and Dance evenings, Corporate Events,
Wine Tastings etc…. |

| Global
Expression Resident Artist
Ketna Patel explains:
“There are some disabling myths about what art
is, how to do it, what is good art, and what art is
for, that have gagged generations, depriving them of
a significant and natural means of expression. We believe
that Artistic and visionary expression in today‚s
world is about reflecting a world that is so large and
layered and complex, with such a melting pot of cultures
and mindsets, that more than ever, Art ceases to be
just an extension of the artist‚s ego. An Artwork
is not unlike the telling of a story, with the Artist
being but a translator, or medium. And these mediums
can be through Mathematics, Songs, Poems, Computer Programs,
Dances, Installations, Music, Food etc.
Thus,
the artist does not just produce THIS. He or she produces
and explores with that, this, what was, what could be,
found objects, recycled materials, photography, paints,
mud, curry paste, newspaper, tea-leaves, acrylics, digital
media, etc…... Whatever seems the most appropriate
for the deliverance or recital of that particular narrative.
Responsibility for the telling of
a story ensures that the work is deliberate, diligent,
and fresh. It is really NOT about throwing things on
the canvas, and hoping for the best! |

MICHI Art Consultancy Our strengths lie in the fact that, we can wear the caps of artists, designers and art consultants all at the same time, working from our own individual studios, thus making the setup very cost efficient. This way, bold ideas from experienced artists are also not dampened by too many ‘middle’ people.
At Michi, the Artists work with the brief, the setting and the story. And shape the Art around it. Our services remain quite personalized as we only take on a handful of projects at a time. As the client deals directly with the Artist, there is less room for misunderstandings, delay and unforeseen costs, making for increased efficiency when it comes to working within the perimeters of the client brief, budget, and time frame.
